STANDARD OR OLYMPIC?

BODYMAX OLYMPIC BARBELL

Olympic barbells are designed to fit weight plates with 2" insert holes. Regular gym-goers consider Olympic barbells the definitive choice for their weight capacity, rotating weight pins, and high quality. Olympic barbells are regularly found in commercial gyms, and for anyone looking to compete in strength training competitions, Olympic bars will be the norm. Olympic barbells have rotating weight pins which protect the bar and the user's joints during heavy lifts.

BODYMAX STANDARD BARBELL

Standard barbells are great for beginners and those looking to kit out their home gym on a budget. Standard barbells only work with standard weight plates with 1" insert holes; they cannot use Olympic weight plates. Standard barbells are ideal for someone's first steps into strength training, whether you're buying for yourself or a teenager who's shown interest in the gym. Standard barbells are a great starting place for anyone new to strength training without breaking the bank.

WHAT LENGTH OF BARBELL SHOULD I CHOOSE?

Once you have decided on your barbell type, your next choice is the length. 7 ft is typically the length of barbell used in commercial gyms, however for homes with less space a 6 ft or a 5 ft barbell may suit you better. Shorter barbells tend to have smaller maximum weight capacities, making the 7 ft barbell the optimal choice; however, their length can make storage a pain for gyms where space is a premium.

WHAT BARBELL COLLARS SHOULD I USE?

This mainly applies to those who choose Olympic barbells, since most BodyMax standard barbells include spinlock collars. For Olympic barbells, we recommend the BodyMax Olympic Lockjaw Collars Set for the most secure hold on your barbell. However, you can also choose the BodyMax Olympic Spring Collars, a cheaper alternative to the lockjaw variants. If you're looking for something more specialised, the Taurus Olympic Magnetic Collars are a lockjaw-style clip with a magnetic connection, making them great for use with an all-in-one trainer or larger gym equipment.

WHAT WEIGHT PLATES SHOULD I USE WITH MY BODYMAX BARBELL?

Barbells

OLYMPIC 2" WEIGHT PLATES

Designed to fit Olympic barbells, Olympic weight plates feature a 2" insert hole for barbells. Olympic weight plates come in different styles (see our weight plates page for more details). Bumper plates are coated in high-impact rubber, protecting the weights and gym floors when the weights are in contact with the floor. Rubber plates are hard-wearing weight plates designed to protect the weight inside the solid rubber shell. Cast iron plates are the most cost-effective weight plates and ideal for starter setups and exercises where the weight plates never touch the ground.

STANDARD 1" WEIGHT PLATES

Standard weight plates are designed to fit standard barbells. Standard weight plates have a 1" insert hole, which is only compatible with standard barbells and equipment with standard weight pegs. Standard weight plates are a more cost-effective way to equip your gym, generally a cheaper alternative to Olympic plates. Standard weight plates come in both Cast iron and Rubber plate types.
