Home Strength is Marcy's Big Thing

Marcy is firmly a home fitness brand, with a catalogue that leans heavily towards strength. Smith machines, stack home gyms, power racks and cages, power towers, benches, dumbbells, kettlebells, weight plates, bars and training accessories all take up space in the range. There are more specialist bits too, including slant boards, bench attachments and other strength training gear.

Many of the larger machines squeeze several exercise stations into a single setup, an approach that goes right back to Marcy’s early multi-gym designs. Cardio is broad as well, covering upright and recumbent bikes, air bikes, rowing machines, treadmills, ellipticals and a few more niche categories.

The Story Behind Marcy

Marcy goes back to the early days of the strength training we know today, when home gyms were still a long way off. The story starts with Walter Marcyan at California’s Muscle Beach and, over the years, crosses paths with Bruce Lee and the White House.

Pre-1946 | It Starts at Muscle Beach 

Walter Marcyan was a competitive weightlifter, bodybuilder and chiropractor with a keen interest in strength and physical conditioning. He became a regular at Muscle Beach in California, then one of the centres of America’s growing strength and bodybuilding scene.

1946 | Marcy Gymnasium Equipment Company 

Marcyan set up the Marcy Gymnasium Equipment Company and opened the first of seven House of Health gyms in Los Angeles. His gyms employed personal trainers and encouraged women to strength train at a time when lifting weights was far less mainstream than it is today.

1959 | The First Marcy All-in-One 

Marcyan developed the Marcy All-in-One Multigym, using cables, pulleys and weights to put several exercises into a single machine. It’s an idea that still looks very familiar across Marcy’s current home strength range.

Mid-1960s | Physical Power Magazine 

Equipment wasn’t Marcyan’s only interest. By the mid-1960s, he was publishing Physical Power, a magazine that promoted weight training as a way to improve athletic performance.

1969 | The Marcy Circuit Trainer 

Marcyan patented the Marcy Circuit Trainer, a multi-station machine created for total-body strength training. It took the all-in-one idea a step further and became one of the more significant pieces of equipment in the Marcy story.

1972 | A Request from Bruce Lee  

The Circuit Trainer caught Bruce Lee’s [martial artist and actor] attention. Marcy’s records say he asked Marcyan to send one to his home in Kowloon while he was filming Enter the Dragon.

1981 | Marcy Goes to the White House 

Marcyan was asked to assist with President Ronald Reagan’s rehabilitation programme following the assassination attempt in 1981. Marcy equipment was later installed in the White House and at Reagan’s home in California.

1982 onwards | Enter IMPEX 

IMPEX was founded in 1982 as a family-owned fitness equipment company. It later acquired the Marcy brand, taking the name into its next chapter and expanding its home fitness range and distribution.

1990s to Today | Marcy at Home 

Strength has remained a big part of Marcy under IMPEX, but the range has grown well beyond multi-gyms. Today, it covers Smith machines, home gyms, racks and cages, power towers, benches, dumbbells, kettlebells, weight plates, bars and training accessories. Cardio has grown too, with exercise bikes, rowing machines, treadmills and ellipticals among the line-up.

Marcy Strength Equipment

Strength is the biggest part of Marcy’s home fitness range, and there’s quite a lot to get through. Benches, racks and free weights cover the familiar home gym staples. Then there are the multi-gyms and all-in-one trainers, where a single machine can handle a much longer list of exercises.

That multi-function approach crops up a lot with Marcy. Depending on the model, one setup might cover guided barbell work, cable exercises, pull-ups, leg training and more.
